Amiel Weeks Whipple

General Amiel Whipple, explorer died in the Civil War

(1818-1863) Amiel Weeks Whipple was a military engineer who, with the United States Boundary Commission, surveyed the new southwestern boundary of the US following the Mexican-American War. Familiarity with the dangers of the desert environment led to his appointment by the War Department to find a new transcontinental railroad route along the 35th parallel along with J. M. Bigelow, physician and botanist, collecting plant specimens along the way. He served as Brigadier General for the Union in the Civil War, dying in 1863 on a Virginia battlefield.
