Archibald Menzies

Archibald Menzies

(1754-1842) Archibald Menzies was a Scottish surgeon and botanist who, as an accomplished scientist and member of the Linnean Society, was commissioned by Captain George Vancouver to document the plants discovered while traversing the world on the HMS Discovery. While wintering in Hawaii with the crew of the Discovery, he was one of three men to first summit the peak of Mauna Loa. He is believed to be the first botanist to do major explorations in the Pacific Northwest. In 1792, he traveled by ship along the coast of California, primarily exploring the immediate coast, collecting and documenting plants now known to also occur in a few desert locations.
