Josiah Gregg

Josiah Gregg

(1806-1850) Josiah Gregg was an early explorer and naturalist in the Southwest. His contributions include many undiscovered plants and accurate maps and accounts of the Southwest and Northern Mexico. He also was a trader, so he collected plants on his many trips for business as well. He wrote a very successful book of his time on Santa Fe trail called Commerce of the Prairies in 1844 that included botany, Native American and other local people as well as natural features of New Mexico. He sent many of his species to botanist George Engelmann to be described.
